New Zero-Day QuickTime Vulnerability Emerges

November 28, 2007 By: tech expert Category: Apple News, Mac Accessories, Mac News No Comments →

Apple updated QuickTime to version 7.3 recently to address a much-exploited bug, but a new QuickTime vulnerability has emerged, prompting security agencies to issue warnings to those running QuickTime on either Windows XP or Windows Vista. There is no word yet on whether Mac OS X is vulnerable to the new QuickTime bug.

Apple’s QuickTime is vulnerable to malware disguised as streaming video, and attack code has been published on the milw0rm.com Web site, security researchers have warned. So far, while the vulnerability affects Windows XP and Windows Vista, the jury is still out on whether Apple’s own OS X is affected.

Apple programmers apparently made two mistakes. First, according to the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team, QuickTime versions 7.2 and 7.3, and perhaps earlier versions, contain a buffer-overflow bug. “Apple QuickTime contains a stack buffer overflow vulnerability in the way QuickTime handles the RTSP Content-Type header,” US-CERT said. “This vulnerability may be exploited by convincing a user to connect to a specially crafted RTSP stream.”

RTSP is the Real-Time Streaming Protocol, which QuickTime supports. When users click on a link for a malicious RTSP stream, an attacker might be able to execute arbitrary code on the compromised system, US-CERT said.

Apple’s popular iTunes software uses QuickTime, so the risk could be quite widespread. While attack code has been published, no actual in-the-wild attacks have been reported.

Some developers getting early iPhone SDK?

November 28, 2007 By: tech expert Category: Apple News, iPhone Accessories, iPhone News No Comments →

Exclusive Some developers are gaining early access to Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch software developer kit, according to reliable sources speaking to Electronista. A handful of companies are said to be getting rough versions of the tools to help code more advanced applications than would be possible with the current web-only solution. Exact details of what the kit allows are unknown, though it is confirmed that it produces native programs and somewhat resembles Google’s OpenSocial in that it mediates between the programmer and the iPhone operating system.

Although treated as a welcome development, the SDK will not be the same as writing a Mac OS X application and has its clear limits, people familiar with the matter say. These details are unavailable, though the features are broad enough that at least one major social networking site is reportedly interested what the native platform can offer versus existing web code. The group of companies has only received its development tools within the past two weeks and is allegedly unable to provide a timetable for when finished software will be ready, though it should be well ahead of the community at large, which only receives the SDK in February.

The slip corroborates remarks made by Apple chief Steve Jobs in his open letter announcing the SDK, which emphasized the need for a unique solution to third-party software that balances features with a layer of protection against privacy invasion and security breaches.

iPhone reception suffers on O2 network?

November 28, 2007 By: tech expert Category: Apple News, iPhone News No Comments →

Several iPhone users on Apple’s discussion forums are reporting that they are having reception issues on the British O2 network, and that it appears to be the iPhone itself causing the problems. Some users are switching from an older handset to the iPhone, and noticing the drop in reception, whereas others are merely wandering around, watching the signal typically fluctuate between zero and three bars. Curiously, when the iPhone is attached to the charging dock, reception increases to five bars for those users. Some have exchanged their handsets – O2 has a 14-day exchange policy, according to some of the forum members – and the issue has dissipated.

One user notes that he has noticed the reception indicator is not entirely accurate on some phones. He says that his previous phones would not work reliably with two bars, but his iPhone receives and sends calls with one bar, and he is able to browse the internet using EDGE, achieving acceptable speeds.

German wireless provider offsets iPhone unlock cost

November 28, 2007 By: tech expert Category: iPhone News No Comments →

German-based wireless carrier Debitel is launching a service plan for Apple’s iPhone to capitalize on a recent court ruling that forced Deutsche Telekom and the Cupertino-based company to offer the handset as an unlocked device, capable of working with other cellular providers. Debitel is offering customers a €600 sign-up bonus to make up for the additional cost of purchasing an unlocked iPhone in Germany, according to AFX News, which makes unlocked iPhones cost the same amount as those sold with a 2-year Deutsche Telekom cellular contract.

Apple initially offered its iPhone exclusively via Deutsche Telekom with a 2-year contract, but was forced via a court injunction to produce unlocked devices in the name of competitor fairness. Apple jacked up the price of the unlocked devices, however, charging non-Deutsche Telekom customers a whopping €1,000 per unit. Debitel’s new initiative effectively offsets the price increase for German customers, enabling them to purchase iPhones for the regular locked price of €600.

Apple is also planning to launch its iPhone in France on Thursday, where government officials told the company that it could not offer the cellular handset as part of an exclusive agreement with any one carrier.
